The problem statement:

How to improve the user experience when they across the road?

Design Brief

In this program, we are going to design a new traffic environment especially for the pedestrian street in Australia to improve the user experience both for drivers and pedestrians on the road.

It is the picture of top view of the crossing road, the green areas imply the weight sensor areas(people waiting areas).

The yellow bar is a kind of road signal will mention people do not start to across the road when the remaining time of green light is not enough.

The sidewalk for pedestrians has two lanes with two opposite directions imply people walking directions.

Apart from the traffic lights for driveway, there is another signal bar to show the signal of different kinds of pedestrians(Children, Elders, Disabled people), which means, when these people across the road, the corresponding signal will light.

And on the traffic lights for pedestrians, there is no buttons anymore. Instead of there is a screen to feel to cards from pedestrians(Children, Elders, Disabled people). If them swipe their cards on the screen, the traffic time will be extended and the relative signal will show for the drivers so that the drivers will know why they need to wait more time.

Sense 1

This picture shows the situation of pedestrians waiting the traffic lights, they stand at the waiting area( The green areas). If there is someone standing on the green areas, the light of sidewalk will turn to red(if nobody on the waiting areas, the lights on the road will be off).
In addition, if there is elders or children on the waiting area, they can swipe their card on the screen installed on the traffic lights.

Situation one(wait people is few)

When the people waiting the traffic lights, the red lights on the sidewalk will become wider and wider to imply the waiting time. At the same time, the kerb of the green area will show red lights to imply the “wait” & “stop” signal.

Situation two(many people waiting)

If there are many people standing on the waiting areas, the red lights on the road will change more quickly from narrow to wide, which means if more people waiting the traffic lights, the shorter time they need to wait.

Sense 2

When the red lights on the sidewalk fill the road, the all lights show the colour of green which means people can go through the road. And then, with the time goes by, the green lights become narrow and narrow, which means the time for people crossing the road is less and less.

If much more people across the road, the speed of change(narrow and narrow) will be slower than those in situation of fewer people across the road.

Sense 3

With the time of traffic green light passing away, when there is no enough time for people to across the whole road, the kerb signal at the edge of the waiting area will show yellow lights to show people that they cannot start to across the road even the road is still open and also stimulate the people still on the road move more quickly.

Sense 4

2%c2%aca%c2%b5%e2%88%86aWhen people across the road, if there are any elders or children on the road, the time of green light will be extended(because they swipe they cards). At the same time, the relative signal will show for the drivers so that they will know why they need to wait more time for traffic lights.

If there is no body on the waiting area, the crossing is always open for the driveway.

If there is one people on the waiting area, the lights on the road will turn red to imply people that she starts to wait the traffic lights.

With the time goes by, the red light will become wider on the road to imply the waiting time for pedestrians.

When the red light fill the road, the red light will turn to green, which implies that people can go through the road.

If there is just one people crossing the road, the green light will become narrow and narrow quickly(the green time for single people is shorter than those for many people).

When the remaining time is not enough for people crossing the whole road, the light installed at the edge of the waiting area will show yellow colour to implies people on the road move for quickly and also tell people on the waiting area do not across the road.

If there are many people standing on the waiting area, the red lights on the road will change wider more quickly than those of single people.

When many people across the road, the green light on the road will change to narrow more slowly than those of few people(because it can give more time for many people to across the road).

There is a screen installed on the pole of the traffic lights so that the elders(children and disabled people) would swipe their card and the time of green light will be extended.

Possible problems we want to solve in the further design

Problem 1

The waiting area, we use the pressure sensor (feeling weight)to feel how many people. However, if we use this methods, we need to pay much money to install the sensor under the ground and fix the road(waiting area) again. It is too expensive. On another hand, the weight sensor cannot feel the actual number of people because people always with different weight.

Therefore, we might choose camera instead of the pressure sensor to detect how many people.

We will use the technology of openCV to detect the numbers of people.

Problem 2

The light on the road, how can make them enough strong to bear the pressure from cars and pedestrians? 

We want use a set of mini LED instead of the bigger LED, because the surface area of min LED is extreme small, which can easily to bear higher pressure than those of big LED. In addition, the bossing of these small LED could imply the direction for the blind people and at the same time those LED have no influence for pedestrians and cars to go through the road.

However, how to make these light can be enough eye-catching at the all the time? It is still a question we should consider in the later steps.

In addition, we want to add the blind characters at the both ends of the sidewalk for the blind people. In this way, the blind people could also feel the correct walking  directions before they start to across the road.

Problem 3

We use the LED to draw and appear the waiting area so that the people could know where they need to stand and for the blind people, they also could feel the LED bossing place.

Problem 4

The time of traffic time for crossing road( wait time & walking time) depends on the number of people and the width of the road that pedestrians need to go across.
